In this weekend's divisional playoff game against the Houston Texans, the participation of Ravens tight end Mark Andrews is uncertain. Andrews, who suffered a significant ankle injury on November 16, showed positive signs this week by participating in full practice on both Wednesday and Thursday. However, Head Coach John Harbaugh stated that Andrews' status is still uncertain, officially listing him as questionable.
Andrews himself expressed his willingness to play if he believes he can contribute to the team. To be eligible to play, he would need to be activated off injured reserve by Friday. He emphasized the importance of being helpful to the team, stating that if he feels close but not entirely ready, he will let his teammates take over and aim to return in the following weekend.
On the defensive side, cornerback Marlon Humphrey, dealing with a calf injury, did not practice throughout the week and has been ruled out. This leaves Brandon Stephens and likely Ronald Darby as the starting cornerbacks against the Texans' formidable passing attack led by C.J. Stroud and Nico Collins.
Darby, who has made seven starts this season, received praise from Defensive Coordinator Mike Macdonald for his consistent performance. Meanwhile, outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney, who returned from an illness, is set to play. The Ravens will also see the return of wide receiver Zay Flowers, outside linebacker Odafe Oweh, and linebacker Malik Harrison, all of whom have participated fully in practice and are expected to play.
Running back Dalvin Cook has been elevated to the 53-man roster, with Harbaugh confirming his availability for Saturday's game. Cook, however, expressed uncertainty about the extent of his workload. On the injury front, linebacker Del'Shawn Phillips (shoulder) is questionable, while wide receiver Tylan Wallace (knee) has been ruled out.
In the absence of Wallace, wide receiver/returner Devin Duvernay will be activated off injured reserve and is set to play, as confirmed by Harbaugh. The Ravens currently have two open 53-man roster spots, one for Duvernay and another that could potentially be filled by Mark Andrews if he is deemed ready. The team needs to make these roster moves by 4 p.m. tomorrow.
Turning to the Texans, multiple defensive starters are dealing with injuries but are expected to play. Defensive ends Jonathan Greenard and Will Anderson Jr., both with impressive sack numbers, returned to practice on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday due to ankle injuries. Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins, dealing with ribs/shoulder issues, also practiced and is set to play. The only defender ruled out for the Texans is defensive end Jerry Hughes, who has not practiced all week.
Additionally, fullback Andrew Beck returned to practice in a limited capacity and is listed as questionable, while backup right tackle George Fant is also questionable due to illness. The Texans appear to have key defensive players ready to go despite their injury concerns.
As the game approaches, the status of key players remains uncertain, adding an element of suspense to the Ravens-Texans matchup.
