A recent study, shared in the Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes journal, uncovers how childhood experiences shape heart health later in life. Researchers reveal that early exposure to abuse, neglect, and substance use at home can impact cardiovascular well-being down the road.
Lead author Robin Ortiz, from New York University Langone, emphasizes the importance of starting cardiovascular disease prevention efforts early. Ortiz points out that while adverse childhood environments are linked to poorer heart health in adulthood, supportive and consistent caregiving can outweigh early adversity's effects.
The study analyzed data from over 2,000 participants enrolled in the CARDIA study, a long-term investigation of cardiovascular risk factors. They tracked individuals for more than 35 years, assessing various factors including childhood adversity and caregiver warmth.
Surprisingly, the study found that exposure to both high levels of caregiver warmth and high levels of child abuse resulted in lower cardiovascular health scores. Conversely, those who experienced high warmth and low abuse had the highest scores. These patterns persisted over the 20-year follow-up period.
Ortiz highlights the significance of stable and predictable support during childhood for better cardiovascular health outcomes in adulthood. The findings suggest that an unstable childhood environment could lead to poorer health later on.
Furthermore, the study reveals that the relationship between childhood adversity and cardiovascular health is more pronounced among individuals with higher incomes in adulthood. Ortiz stresses the importance of addressing both healthy caregiving relationships and socioeconomic challenges to achieve better health equity.
The study was funded by various institutions, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and involved researchers from several universities and medical centers. Ortiz emphasizes the need for policies and programs supporting caregivers and children to promote better heart health for all.
